A beautiful young girl ran through the corridors of the house, laughing happily as she tried to catch a butterfly. She looked vibrant, cheerful, and full of life. But her bright smile slowly turned into a deep frown when she failed in her attempt to catch it. The butterfly fluttered past her fingers and slipped out through the open window, disappearing into the vast garden in front of Sanjh’s simple yet classy home.
Breathing heavily from all the running, Sanjh walked into the kitchen. There she saw her mother trying out yet another new recipe for lunch, as she always did. Her mother, Mrs. Jyoti Verma, was a housewife and an extraordinary cook who loved experimenting with different dishes.
It was around noon. Sanjh noticed that her father was not home. He was probably at one of his hotels, busy with work as usual.
Sanjh was about to go and talk to her mother when suddenly a mobile ringtone sliced through the quiet air of the house.
It was Jyoti’s phone.
The caller ID read: Mom ❤️
The moment Sanjh saw the name, irritation spread across her face. It was her grandmother, Nirmala Verma, calling her mother.
Sanjh already knew exactly what was about to happen.
Her mother would talk to her grandmother for at least two hours, discussing all sorts of random and unnecessary things. And in the process, lunch would be delayed—leaving Sanjh hungry.
Just the thought of delayed lunch made Sanjh even more irritated. After all the running she had done chasing that butterfly, she was starving.
As expected, the conversation went on… and on… and on.
Two hours later, Jyoti finally ended the call and turned toward Sanjh.
By then, Sanjh was sitting on the sofa, opening her third packet of chips, when she suddenly noticed the serious expression on her mother’s face. She immediately straightened up.
Jyoti looked at her daughter and said,
“Sanjh, pack your bags for a week. We’re going on a trip.”
Sanjh blinked in surprise.
“A trip? But where are we going?” she asked.
Jyoti hesitated for a moment before speaking, “We are going to Nishigiri.”
